Frequently Asked Questions
What type of writing do you edit?
Absolutely anything! While I have the most experience editing full-length fictional novels (particularly of the romance genre) I will take on any editing project you entrust me with. It can be fiction or non-fiction, of any length or genre.
What genres do you edit?
Anything! Some of my favourites are romance, horror, and crime thriller, but I will edit any genre. I also have no triggers or topic limitations and will accept everything from filthy smut to gory horror.
Do I have to be a published author to submit my work?
Absolutely not! I have edited everything from high school level essays to full length novels by popular published authors. I accept clients of any background with any experience/skill level.
What is your editing process?
- You enquire about potentially booking an editing service. I send you the New Client Questionnaire to fill out and you complete the form, then email me your excerpt (of around 1000 words) ready for a sample edit.
- I complete the sample edit and email it back to you, then allow you time to consider whether I am the right editor for you.
- Yay! You chose me! From here I draft a written contract outlining what services will be provided, the time period these services will be completed in, and the associated costs, payment due dates, and chosen payment methods.
- Once the contract is signed by both parties, I send you an invoice for 10% of the final editing cost to lock in your booking. This establishes a secure line of payment and confirms reliability. It is non-refundable due to change of mind.
- In the lead up to your booking date, I send an invoice for 30% of the final editing cost, which must be paid before editing begins. When the day of your booking comes, I confirm the 30% invoice has been paid, then begin work as soon as I have the full manuscript.
- Over the next several weeks (starting from the date of your initial booking), I complete the edit. Depending on the length of your manuscript and your chosen editing service, the edit can take around 3-4 weeks, but it often takes less. On the rare occasion, it may take longer, but this expectation will be disclosed at the contract signing stage. During this time, I will keep you updated on how the edit is progressing, and when I expect it to be complete.
- Once the edit is complete, I will return the full manuscript (including all editorial comments), along with any supporting documentation. I ask for the remaining 60% of the final editing cost within 7 days of the full manuscript being returned.
- Woohoo! The edit is complete! Once full payment has been received, I will follow up and send you my Feedback Form to fill out. This asks for a written review (50-100 words) of my editing service. Your review will be featured on my social media and website.
- Either upon publication, or in the lead up to a set publication date, I will make posts/teasers promoting your novel on my social media. It will also be included on the Portfolio page of the website.
How long does the editing process take?
Once I receive your manuscript, the editing process usually takes around 3 weeks. Your edit may take longer depending on the length of your manuscript or chosen service, but either way I will keep you updated about my expected finish date.
How many rounds of editing do you do?
Each of my editing services involve a single exchange of the manuscript between author and editor (one round of editing). I edit as thoroughly as I can and then return it, leaving you to reflect on my comments and adjust accordingly. I will always be available to answer any questions you have about my feedback, but I will not accept the entirety of the manuscript back after my editing is complete.
If you do wish to return your manuscript to me for a second or even third round of editing after you’ve revised my initial edits, additional costs will apply. This is something we can discuss on an individual basis. If you wish to have me proofread a manuscript I edited previously, my standard rate of proofreading will apply.
Please note: one round of editing does not mean one read through. I will likely read through your entire manuscript multiple times during my editing process.
What format does my manuscript have to be in?
I only accept editing submissions via email, and they must be formatted as Microsoft Word documents. I do not accept hard copies, PDFs, Pages documents, or Google Docs.
What payment methods do you accept?
My preferred payment method is bank transfer through PayID (for clients within Australia) and PayPal (for international clients). Australian clients may also choose to pay via PayPal.
What qualifications do you have?
I have a Bachelor of Arts from The University of Queensland, where I majored in Writing and English Literature. I have completed 6-month courses including Publishing, Editing and Authorship, Writing: Grammar, and individual courses covering creative writing for the following: Narrative, Poetics, Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Screenwriting.
